The famous weather-predicting groundhog, Punxsutawney Phil, welcomes his first children.
The popular groundhog Phil and his wife Phyllis recently welcomed two new family members, according to a Facebook post on March 27. They wrote, “We have babies!!” in the post. The news that Phil and Phyllis gave birth to two healthy groundhog babies makes the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club very happy. The pictures of the parents along with the cute baby groundhogs were posted on social media. The healthy infants can be seen writhing with one another in a video.
The New Additions To Phil’s Family
According to the reports, the president of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club’s Inner Circle, Thomas Dunken, confirmed that Phil and Phyllis have given birth to their first pair of babies. Dunken revealed that it was a surprise for them, as they were unaware of Phyllis’ pregnancy. He shared that they found Phyllis with two baby groundhogs when they went to feed them with fresh fruits and vegetables. Dunken shared that he had a conversation with Phil with his cane, which enables him to speak Groundhogese, and mentioned that Phil was so excited about starting a family.
While Phil was staying close to his new family, a few pictures of the adorable babies that clung to Phyllis were also made public. Even though the groundhog welcomed two babies, it doesn’t appear they will follow in their father’s footsteps. As stated on the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club website, “There has only been one Punxsutawney Phil,” and there never will be another, so they will not be doing what he did.
Why Is Phil Famous?
Every year on February 2nd, Punxsutawney Phil is widely recognized for his ability to predict whether the world will experience an extended winter or an early spring. If Phil sees his shadow it means that six more weeks of winter would be left. But spring would almost be here if he didn’t notice his shadow. Since the groundhog didn’t see his shadow this year, he concluded spring would arrive early.

Since 1886, Phil has been making forecasts! Although groundhogs are known to live only six years in the wild, the website claims that Phil achieves his longevity by consuming the “elixir of life,” a secret concoction. Every summer at the Groundhog Picnic, Phil drinks one drink and is suddenly granted an extra seven years of life.
According to the Inner Circle, there is only one groundhog, Phil, who has been forecasting the weather for over 130 years and is 100% correct. But NOAA states that, for the last ten years, Phil has only made the right decision roughly 30% of the time.
Punxsutawney Phil’s growing descendants will be displayed in a climate-controlled enclosure at the Punxsutawney Memorial Library for fans to see. Now that there is a family of four groundhogs, the group intends to build an additional habitat for them at the library.
