Grazie Sophia Christie is a Cuban American writer who rose to fame after she published her well-acclaimed magazine titled, ‘The Case for Marrying an Older Man.’ The essay was published in New York Magazine’s The Cut on Wednesday, 27 March 2024. In the essay, she encourages women including herself to get married to a rich, older man to secure their future.
Grazie Sophie Christie Openly Encourages Younger Women To Marry Rich Men
According to her, women’s lives are nothing but “more work and little rest.” Therefore, she advises women to marry older men when they are still very young. Her theory is that, by doing so, the life of women will get easy, and it will get them off of a male-defined timeline as well as prevent the occasional clash of their professional and reproductive lives. Though she believes certain factors might come in between the decision like one’s freedom, an entirely independent identity, and so on, she considers them only small when compared to the life in which a woman will have no unnecessary adult responsibilities, except for enjoying life as it is.
Though it contradicts the phenomenon put forward by feminists all around the world, the writer insists that it is a choice and it is the most obviously intelligent one. In the essay, she says she was flummoxed when none of the Harvard undergraduates put in some effort to attract wealthy men out there. ‘I could not understand why my female friends did not join me in attracting the wealthy men, given their intelligence,” she wrote.
According to Christie, it is easier for women to mold themselves into the likes of powerful men, to find happiness in a state of submission, and dependence, and to never grow into independent adults.
Ever since the release of the magazine, Christie has been receiving major public backlash and some readers have expressed their concern in her way of thinking saying these are the odd thoughts of an aspiring writer. A reader writes on social media that she has been wondering what a girl like her, who has no idea about what a woman can be without a man, could have to write about.
For a class of readers, Christie has been putting forth the wrong advice to the growing generation, at least they believe her theories are not beneficial to human beings who constantly seek meaningful and happy lives.
Though various opinions have been raised about the essay, questioning its message, Christine says some people have mistaken it for the benefits of women marrying older men, whereas, the essay is all about the perks that come with marrying rich men. In the essay, the writer says how the life of a woman does not change overnight just because she marries an older man, whereas, she suggests that the complete focus must be on his wealth. She says it is that element of the essay that has to be grasped by the readers.

For the writer, adulthood was nothing short of “exhausting obligations”, and that was one of the major reasons she believed taking responsibility for her own life was unappealing.
