Very recently, the trans actor opened up about how she was recently offered “tons of trans roles” but does not want her real-life identity to define her professional life. Speaking in a press conference, Schafer said that being known as a trans actor itself was demeaning for her.
“I do not want to be reduced to that,” Schafer said, adding “I worked so hard to get where I am, especially through my transition journey, and now I want to move and want to be a girl.”
She continued, “I know for a fact that I am one of the most known trans people in the entertainment industry right now. (Therefore), I do feel like I have a certain kind of responsibility toward my community, and I feel a bit of guilt for not speaking for them.”
According to the actress, her ability to reject trans roles was nothing short of a “privilege.” Schafer further said that she does not always have to bring her identity into her career just for the cause of honoring the transgender community.
The model further reassured her fans that making it the centerpiece of what she has been doing would still not allow her to get any further to her cause. “I believe getting good work in the interest of the movement (supporting the trans community) would be noticed more than talking about it all the time,” the actress remarked.
The alum of the Emmy Award-winning series garnered the attention of her fans to the long-running debate in Hollywood, where a group of industry leaders believed that trans characters should be played by people who are originally trans.
Over the last few years, some actors have expressed regret for playing trans roles including, Eddie Redmayne, who said in a 2021 interview that she thought it was the right decision to take the trans role in 2015’s ‘The Danish Girl.” but it turned out a mistake.
Individuals who oppose the claim that trans characters should be played by trans people say the concept of acting is all about becoming someone else before the camera. They are completely against the idea that actors should play roles that have their characteristics.
