Jennifer Holliday (born October 19, 1960) is an actress and singer from the United States of America. She began her career on Broadway, appearing in Dreamgirls (1981–83) and Your Arms Too Short to Box with God (1980–81), before establishing a successful recording career. She is best known for her debut single, the Dreamgirls song “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going,” and the rhythm-and-blues/pop hit “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going,” for which she won a Grammy in 1983. Additionally, she received a 1982 Tony Award for Dreamgirls.
Personal life
Holliday has had two marriages. They married in March 1991, less than two months after meeting keyboardist Billy Meadows in a nightclub where she was performing. “He had a wonderful sense of humor and he constantly made me laugh,” Holliday recalls of her first spouse. “I’d been feeling terrible for so long that I desired to chuckle.” However, just nine months later, in December 1991, they divorced; the marriage, according to Holliday, “Eventually ran out of steam. ” “We simply didn’t know each other well enough,” she remarked of Meadows.
Her second marriage began on March 21, 1993, and ended in 1994 with Rev. Andre Woods, a Detroit clergyman. The marriage was covered by Jet magazine in their April 19, 1993 issue. While Woods was a charming Detroit preacher, she later admitted that he was also a player who squandered her money. Holliday was saddened, however, when her second marriage failed in 1994, only four months after her mother died of cancer. “It was as though I were seeing two simultaneous deaths,” she recalled. “The anguish was palpable.”
Holliday earned a bachelor’s degree from Texas Southern University.
In 2000, she was awarded a Doctor of Music honoris causa by Berklee College of Music in Boston. In 2001, she presented the tap dance show 21 Below at New York’s Town Hall, and in 2002, she appeared in the Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS production Nothing Like a Dame at the St. James Theatre.
Holliday was a resident of Atlanta as of late February 2011.
