Disturbed by the ongoing coronavirus epidemic in the country, 35-year-old resident doctor Vivek Rai, working in a private hospital in the national capital, Delhi, allegedly committed suicide by swinging at his residence.
He had been treating Corona-infected patients at the ICU unit of Max Hospital in Saket for a long time.
The former head of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) said that Dr Rai was distressed to see the deaths of people happening every day.
Dr Rai’s body found hanging from the ceiling fan in the house
According to The Print, a woman phoned the police at around 11 pm on Friday to inform her that her friend’s husband was not opening the door.
Upon reaching the spot when the police opened the door, he saw that Dr Rai’s body was hanging on the ceiling fan.
Police have also recovered a suicide note written by Dr Rai from the spot. In such a situation, the police denied the possibility of murder.
While addressing the family members and friends in the suicide note, police said that Dr Rai wrote that he was committing suicide of his own free will. He has wished everyone well. He has not held anyone responsible.
An official told The Print that Dr Rai’s wife has not given any information about his depression.
He said that Dr Rai was very busy in the hospital due to fast-growing corona infection cases in Delhi. In addition, Max Hospital was converted into Corona Care Center. Similarly, he also said that Dr Rai had no previous history of being in depression.
Hospital administration expressed grief over Dr Rai’s untimely death.
The Max Hospital administration has expressed condolences to the family, expressing grief over the untimely death of Dr Rai.
The hospital administration tweeted, ‘Vivek Rai, a first-year student of family medicine at Max Hospital, has passed away today. We have come to know that he committed suicide at his residence. He completed his work shift at 2 p.m. yesterday. We have received information about his death from his neighbours. ‘
Dr Rai was treating eight corona infected patients every day- Wankhedkar
Former IMA chief Dr Ravi Wankhedkar tweeted, ‘Rai was a brilliant doctor and helped save hundreds of lives during the epidemic. During the last month, he was treating corona-infected patients at the ICU unit of Max Hospital.
He further wrote, “Dr Rai was treating seven or eight serious corona infected patients daily in the hospital, but he could not save the lives of most of them.”
The system killed Dr Rai- Wankhedkar.
In a tweet posted on Saturday, Dr Wankhedkar said, “He was unhappy for not saving the lives of Corona-infected patients and decided to take serious steps like suicide.” He was deeply troubled by the deteriorating condition of the patients.
He further wrote, ‘His death is “murder by the system”. In which bad science, bad politics and bad governance are responsible. This is an entirely unbearable incident. ‘
